Does wet drywall have to be replaced?
Not always. If the water was clean and the drywall is still firm, we can often dry it in place within 24 to 48 hours. If it is soft, sagging, crumbling, or stained brown, or if the water was dirty, that part has to be cut out and replaced. We test the wall first, and we show you the readings before we decide.
Why Water Damaged Drywall Is More Than a Stain
Drywall looks like a flat wall. It is really a chalky center pressed between two sheets of paper, and water hurts every part of it.
- 1The paper faceThe paper on the front and back. It bubbles, peels, and stains. Mold likes to grow on wet paper.
- 2The gypsum coreThe chalky center. When it gets wet, it turns soft and weak. It can crumble or sag.
- 3The space behind the wallInsulation, wood studs, wires, and pipes. This space can stay wet long after the wall feels dry.
That is why paint and a fan are not a fix. The front can look fine while the inside is still wet. Trapped water leads to bad smells, stains that come back, and mold. So we measure moisture in the wall and behind it instead of going by looks.

What Makes Drywall Wet in Frisco Homes
Most of the wall damage we see starts with one of these.
Water from inside the home
A pipe that leaks or bursts inside a wall, a pipe that froze and split in a winter cold snap, an overflowing tub or toilet, a leaking dishwasher or washing machine hose, or an AC drain line that backs up in summer heat. Inside leaks can soak a wall for weeks before a stain shows.
Water from outside the home
A roof leak after hail or heavy rain, rain pushed in around a window, or flood water that rises from the ground. North Texas storms can damage a roof fast, and the water often runs down inside the wall before anyone sees it.
How Bad Is Your Wall?
It depends on the kind of water and how long the wall stayed wet. Here is what each level of damage usually looks like, and what we usually do about it.
Light Damage
What you see
A damp spot or a faint stain. The wall is still firm and flat, and the paint is not peeling.
What we usually do
Dry the wall where it is, with air movers and a dehumidifier. When the readings are normal, we prime and paint the spot.
Medium Damage
What you see
Bubbling or peeling paint, soft spots, a slight sag, or brown stains that keep growing.
What we usually do
Cut out the wet section, dry the studs and the space behind it, then hang new drywall. We tape, sand, match the texture, and paint.
Heavy Damage
What you see
Drywall that crumbles or sags badly, or has fuzzy or black spots. Or the water was sewage or flood water.
What we usually do
Remove the whole damaged section and any wet insulation, dry the framing, and rebuild the wall. For sewage, please stay out. See our sewage cleanup service.
Good to know: drywall pulls water upward, like a wick. A wall can look fine a foot above the wet line and still be wet inside. That is why we take readings and cut a little above the highest wet spot, not just where you can see the stain.
How We Repair Water Damaged Drywall, Step by Step
Every job is different, but we follow the same six steps. We explain each one as we go, so you always know what is happening in your home.
You call, we ask a few questions
A real person answers. We ask what happened, when it started, and which walls are wet. Then we tell you how to stay safe while we are on our way.
We map every wet spot
We use moisture meters and a thermal camera to see how far the water went, including behind the wall. Wet drywall often reaches farther than the stain. Learn more about moisture detection.
We stop more damage
We remove standing water and protect your floors and furniture. If a pipe is still leaking, we help you find the shutoff. See water extraction.
We cut out what is ruined
We cut clean, straight lines a little above the wet readings. We take out wet insulation, and we use plastic barriers to keep dust in the work area.
We dry the wall and the space behind it
We often remove baseboards or make small openings so air can reach inside the wall. Air movers and dehumidifiers run until new readings show it is dry. See dehumidification and structural drying.
We rebuild and hand you the records
We hang new drywall, tape and smooth the seams, match the texture, then prime and paint. You get the moisture readings and photos your insurance company may ask for.
While You Wait for Us: Do This, Not That
A few smart moves in the first hour can save your wall. A few common mistakes can make things worse.
Do this
- Turn off the water at the source if you can do it safely. Know where your main shutoff valve is.
- If water is near outlets or came through the wall, turn off power to that area at the breaker box. Only do this if you can reach it without standing in water.
- Take photos and video of the wall before you move anything. Your insurance company will ask.
- Move furniture, pictures, and shelves away from the wet wall. Lift wet rugs off the floor.
- Call us. We will guide you by phone.
Not this
- Do not paint, caulk, or wallpaper over a wet wall. It traps the water inside, and the stain comes back.
- Do not use outlets or switches on a wet wall.
- Do not poke or cut open a bulging wall yourself. It can hold a lot of water, and wires and pipes may be behind it.
- Do not scrub or sand fuzzy or black spots. That can spread mold spores through the air.
- Do not wait a few days to see if it dries. The mold clock is 24 to 48 hours.

Does Insurance Cover Drywall Repair?
Most homeowners policies cover water damage that is sudden and accidental, like a burst pipe or a broken hose. Damage from a slow leak, or from flood water that rises from outside, is often not covered. Flood damage usually needs its own policy.
Every policy is different, so check yours or call your agent. We offer direct insurance billing, and we give you the photos, readings, and records your adjuster needs. We are not your insurer, so we cannot promise what will be covered.
Wet Walls at a Business or Rental?
A wet wall in an office, store, restaurant, or rental unit can shut down a space. We plan the work to keep downtime short. We also give you clear photos and written notes you can share with owners, tenants, or your insurer.

Drywall Water Damage Questions, Answered
Tap a question to see the answer.
Does wet drywall always have to be replaced?
No. If the water was clean, and the drywall is still firm and was wet for less than about two days, it can often be dried in place. Drywall has to come out if it is soft, sagging, crumbling, or moldy, or if the water was sewage or flood water. We test the wall first and show you the readings before we decide.
How long does drywall water damage repair take?
Drying usually takes about three to five days. The repair after that can take one to three more days, because the joint compound needs time to dry between coats. Big jobs take longer. We give you a schedule before we start.
How much does drywall water damage repair cost?
The price depends on how much wall is wet, how high the water reached, the type of water, whether insulation must be replaced, and the wall texture. We do a free on-site assessment first. Then we explain the plan and the cost in plain words before any work starts.
Will the new drywall match the rest of my wall?
That is our goal. We match the texture, like knockdown or orange peel, which are common in Texas homes. New paint next to old paint can show, so we often paint the whole wall from corner to corner. Ask us about this at the estimate.
Can I just paint over the water stain?
No. Paint does not dry a wall. If the drywall is still wet, the stain can bleed through, and mold can grow behind the paint. The wall must be dried and checked first. After that, a stain-blocking primer and paint can finish the job.
How do I know if mold has started?
Look for a musty smell, dark or fuzzy spots on the wall or baseboards, peeling paint, and allergy-like symptoms that get worse at home. Mold can start within 24 to 48 hours. Do not scrub or sand it. Call us and we will check. See our mold removal service.
Is it safe to stay in my home during the repair?
For clean water, usually yes. We set up plastic barriers to keep dust in the work area. The drying equipment is loud, so keep children and pets away from it. For sewage or flood water, stay out of the affected area until it has been cleaned and sanitized.
Will my insurance pay for it?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Sudden and accidental damage, like a burst pipe, is often covered. Slow leaks and outside flood water often are not. We offer direct billing and provide the records your insurer needs.
My home was built before 1980. Is that a problem?
It can be. Some older drywall joint compound and wall texture contain asbestos. If your home is older, tell us when you call. Material like that should be tested before anyone cuts into it or sands it. Many Frisco homes are newer, but some are not.
